Desktop Migration
I had always been using the same computer for my desktop and my server. You might have noticed recently the system was often offline. It’s probably a failing hard disk, but I’ve never taken the time in the last couple of months to determine the cause exactly. About three weeks ago, I finally installed sarge on another computer and have been migrating since then. Except for the TV, I’m using sarge 100% on the desktop, and I’m about to move the TV/Capture card to the “new” computer.
When I was using windows, I spent most of my time with bash in an rxvt window. I didn’t have the infamous Start button, so launched most programs at the command line. I was used to (g)vim and only used a few accessories to let my windows snap to each other, for example.
Moving to gnu/linux on the desktop wasn’t that big a deal. I started using this OS nine or ten years ago, but generally only thru a text terminal. Keeping with that philosophy, I’m now using Ion for my window manager. I was using mozilla, so I stayed with that, going as far as copying my preference folder from one OS to the other. About the only snag there was downgrading from 1.7 to 1.6 on sarge, some of my filters aren’t supported.
As for the rest, I’m adding stuff bit by bit, fixing my mail infrastructure, keyboard layout (setxkbmap ca_enhanced pour le clavier québécois), screen resolution, etc. I’ll get back to those as I go along.
