On December 16th one of GIMPS’ computers (Curtis Cooper’s, actually) reported a new Mersenne prime! This is GIMPS’ 4th new prime in 25 months — an incredible run of good luck! Almost 10 million digits, or in other words, we’re nearing the 100 000$ award promised by the EFF:

EFF will award $100,000 to the first individual or group who discovers the first prime number with at least 10,000,000 decimal digits.”

Get the whole 9 152 052 digits of a prime here. According to the Mersenne wiki and Wikipedia, the new record prime is 2 ^ 30 402 457 - 1.

  1. That’s nice but I’ve already known the number from Tuesday, from LM Reference Frame, http://motls.blogspot.com/2005/12/43rd-known-mersenne-prime-m30402457.html
