15 mashups 15 minutes

“Quinze mashups en 15 minutes / Fifteen mashups in 15 minutes - Robin Millette - 30 minutes (bin quoi !)” - source: titre de ma présentation pour Barcamp Montréal

La suite de ce billet en français…
The rest of this post in english too…

I’ll be presenting at Barcamp Montreal Saturday, October 21st 2006. I’m expecting your mashup suggestions, so please don’t be shy! What’s a mashup you ask? It’s the mix of many data sources or representations usually meant to illustrate a relationship. The ProgrammableWeb site is full of mashups and APIs (data sources).

  1. hey robin
How about a mashup between http://maps.google.com/ and http://www.stm.info/ . Something like what been done at http://www.thebus.ca/

  2. Hmm, that should be trivial. The STM site is hell to parse, but I know where I can find the info :)

Forget about the schedules though… the realtime constraints (1 mashup per minute) makes this kind of scraping impossible.

  4. Hello Robin,

I am trying to contact you because I found out on the Internet that there is a web site (tools.waglo.com/covers/azfad) on which appear lots of album cover and there I found the cover of the CD by my band, Liverpull. I just wanted to know how you knew about us. I don´t really know if it is you who put it there, but there appears your name on that website.

Please contact me by e-mail, ok?

    Thank you very much!

    Regards.

  5. The data comes from last.fm / audioscrobbler, specifically the LIVERPULL page. I’m fetching the covers from amazon.com. If you like that, you might be interested in my other service which shows a music map, this one with the bands I most listen to.

  6. How about a mashup between google maps and *selectable* open-source / open-tech calendars ? Starting with FACIL’s of course.

I want to know what upcoming events are nearby..!

  7. Here’s another idea: movie theaters, with upcoming showtimes depending on the time the map is displayed.

  8. Maps are cool but… I was sort of looking for inspiration for other types of mashups. The possibilities are limitless. But yeah, with the progress I did in the last few days, I can whip’em out pretty fast. The idea was to make 15 mashups (not just maps!) in 15 minutes, so it’s got to be simple.

It’s a two part process though: scrapping and mapping. The latter I’ve dealt with, but the former can be a real pain for a few reasons, technical, legal, bla bla. Actually, the first step is to convert the plain html into some kind of web service I can then use on the map.

I’ll see what I can do with the movie showtimes, no promises though.

  10. Peter (doh, I didn’t notice it was _you_), I found a page full of ads, but it’s got a google map with the montreal metro stations, including the three future ones in Laval.

  11. Idée: parser l’horaire des émissions de Radio-Canada pour produire un iCalendar afficheable dans Google Calendar:

    Télévision:
    http://www.radio-canada.ca/gh/televisiongenerale/ghHoraires.asp?format=texte&ghdate=10/9/2006&ghdate2=10/15/2006
