Pull me back in

Filed under: Canada, English, Projets, anglais, cogitateurs-agitateurs, gouvernement, hacktivism, wiki Robin @ 13:28 (1491 lectures)

Hugh champions another project, the Visible Politics wiki for Civic Access. I’ll have to give this some thought later, but I’m just way too busy right this minute. Of course, it would have to be bilingual… and I’m not sure I share Hugh’s enthusiasm completely. I’ve seen Cogitateurs-Agitateurs struggle for the last few years with no real sign of taking off. Not saying why shouldn’t try, given the success of LibriVox for example :)

Also, I was wondering if we really want a wiki, or something more formal to do this, since we know in advance the sort of structure we’ll be aiming for, and loose ends can be compensated with tags.

Filed under: FACIL, Français, Québec, free, free software, french, logiciel-libre, software Robin @ 12:56 (2509 lectures)

Hot Off The Wiki, BarCamp edition

Filed under: English, Projets, anglais, free, free software, hacktivism, logiciel-libre, software, web, wiki Robin @ 12:29 (6295 lectures)

Been working on another little tool for the Waglo Labs collection for the last few days. This one, called Hot Off The Wiki, or HOTW for short, let’s you view at a glance what’s currently hot on a given wiki, by number of edits and amounts of change. For the moment, I can parse the pbwiki and moinmoin recent changes feeds, working on a few more. I’ll release source the moment I refactor things out a little.

I’ve got a few more planned features too, like arrows pointing up or down according to trends, maybe a history view including sparklines (like I did with Sparktags). I’d love to read your comments about it, please don’t be shy :)

Geist on Vista

Filed under: English, anglais, copyright, drm, media, microsoft Robin @ 14:32 (1377 lectures)

Michael Geist mentions the recent Vista Cost Analysis and goes on. I had to quote the end of his article:

When Microsoft introduced Windows 95 more than a decade ago, it adopted the Rolling Stones “Start Me Up” as its theme song. As millions of consumers contemplate the company’s latest upgrade, the legal and technological restrictions may leave them singing “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” - source: Michael Geist

Montreal, action !

Filed under: English, Montréal, Projets, anglais, bande-passante, business, collaborer, computer, culture, real life Robin @ 16:44 (2706 lectures)

Why are all my recent posts about Montreal? Did I mention I never left for Rawdon as planned back in december?

Julien gets the ball rolling in his latest post about Google moving to Montreal (mentionned here) and looking to hire 200-300 new geeks. A bunch of comments (Hugh, Patrick) are hitting the nail right on the head. I was already talking about topic 2.5 years ago with ideas for Montreal and free software. How have things changed?

Freecycle Montréal, encore

Filed under: Français, Montréal, bande-passante, collaborer, computer, free, freecycle, french, hacktivism Robin @ 19:12 (2694 lectures)

Google Montreal

Filed under: English, Montréal, anglais, google Robin @ 16:46 (3493 lectures)

Update: see also Montreal, action for the latest repercussions on the new Google office in Montreal.

Google has opened a research and development office in downtown Montreal, less then 10 people at the moment but it’s destined to grow. Interested? Google is looking for Windows programmer for its Montreal office. I’d like to hear from you if you work there at the moment. Too bad Eric had to move to New York, but such is life.

Update : this might interest Alexandre Limoge ;)

Update #2 : Sylvain points to Sébastien Provencher who links to a french article in La Presse on Google’s Montreal office.

“Linux” doesn’t exist

Filed under: English, FLOSS, GNU/Linux, anglais, free, free software, logiciel-libre, software Robin @ 19:39 (1174 lectures)

No matter how hard people try, “Linux” doesn’t exist in the true sense. It’s a kernel, yeah, but mostly a concept, a buzzword. I used to say GNU/Linux, but even that doesn’t mean much, so now I’m just using quotes around the word.

People expect one thing and they get another, all because “Linux” means different things to different people - think of the many distros for instance. Most software is multiplatform anyway, a direct consequence of being free software. So why not call it that or be specific and name your distro if that’s really important. My guess is, it’s the applications that matter. And applications don’t care much about the OS they run on nowadays.

Inspired by a message on the MLUG mailing list.

1984 sur boing boing - gone !

Filed under: 1984, Amis, Français, comic, culture, french Robin @ 13:14 (1142 lectures)

Filed under: Français, Meetups, Québec, french, hacktivism, joliette, logiciel-libre, software Robin @ 12:46 (1141 lectures)

Secrets secrets

Filed under: Amis, Français, bio, blogtag, french, real life Robin @ 12:25 (1048 lectures)
