OpenMoko now shipping (developer preview)

UPDATE: There are ads out there in Ogg Theora if that’s what you’re looking for, also available over Youtube (no open codec necessary).

The OpenMoko developer preview is now shipping. Is anyone in Montreal or around getting one?

Forget the iPhone, it’s not going to work in Canada for another year, at least legally.

The OpenMoko has everything to do with freedom. Choose your service, the color, the software, etc. It’s a nice GNU/Linux platform which is promised to a great future.

Fabian mentionned the OpenMoko a few times, I bet he’ll be one of the first to hold one.

  1. There should be demos of this device. Knowing more about how it works, what it can do, the quality of what it can do, what it can synchronize with, etc. will be helpful to judge this.

The lack of knowledge makes me not want it at all.

  2. I’m not promoting it, I’m asking who had planned to get one. It’s an open platform, there is plenty of info out there, clicking the image should reveal some. Thanks for dropping by, sorry I’m not the ad you expected.

  3. I must confess getting one of those at this stage would the ultimate open tech advocacy move at this time for me. Very tempting, as my cell phone is conveniently refusing to charge these days and is mostly useless in more than one way I can think of (including being unable to load other peoples’ downloaded apps via bluetooth).

October seems more likely for me, but I think we still need to follow this very closely and help the project any way we can - information is one good way. I personally converted those videos from YouTube, so it’s a tiny step in that direction :)

Regarding bragging rights, I’ve already held one so that part of the excitement is fortunately gone for me :) pfew!

  4. You said it better than I could, Fabian. These aren’t for everyone (right now). It explains why I gave so little details, expecting anyone who would be getting one to know what he was getting into.

I must also thank Long N. who’s prompting me to explain a little more clearly what I’m doing with this blog. It will be the subject of another post, probably this week.

I heard Evan Prodromou will be ordering one, sweet!

  5. I’ve ordered two, actually. One advanced kit with the debug board should I care to fiddle at that level or unfortunately brick one.
