Settling in

Diving in the second week of my new life, the dust is finally settling as I am catching up with clients and tying a few loose ends. If you live in Québec, you know how great the weather has been. It’s been incredible in Rawdon! I just wish it would keep up like this, since we’re not going to be isolating the place yet, because we have to jack it first, but for that we must solidify the structure. So we’re just going to fix the chimney and wood stove (maybe change it for a more efficient one) and use that to heat our water. In spring, we’ll be installing a thin outdoor reservoir to hold and heat the water efficiently and cheaply. I put up a few pictures of my Rawdon home online.

My high speed internet mapping project is going along quite well. I talked to a few key people and I’ll be submitting a funding request at ISOC shortly to keep the project going and write some public free software. I also started a Facebook group (my first) for anyone who knows someone still stuck with a dial-up access to internet because nothing else is available to them.

I don’t think I had as many visitors last year as I had in just the last two weeks. I am 100% at home and that’s so great, I can’t describe it. IRC feels less strange too, not chatting with my roommates at la Bande-Passante from a neighboring room but actually from 60 km away.

Someone entered my life in the most unexpected way, but as matters of the heart go, this is only natural. I’ve been spending the last week-ends with a friend I met a few years ago at the Free Software Workshop (Ateliers du libre) and recently came to rediscover under a new light. I hadn’t felt like this about someone for a long time but most importantly, the feeling is quite mutual.

  2. Hi Martin! My phone number (450 834-8410) was in my last post (in french) ;)

Hope you can hitch a ride soon before all the colors lay overlapped on the ground.
