Leverage versus Anger

Filed under: English, anglais, real life Robin @ 17:39 (1590 lectures)

This is going to be another of those strange posts that sometimes crawl out of me to infect minds. Please handle with all due care.

I think we’ve all had that Hulk moment as a reaction to some awful situation when anything is possible.

“I’m gonna flip this car I’m so mad!”

Yet it never really works that way. Often it’s much less obvious, but the general reaction is to turn to brute force to solve whatever problem we may be facing. Other times, you may feel like just giving up. I mean, you know you won’t flip that car, no matter how angry you are. We don’t let the adrenaline myth take over.

If we’d stop to think about it for a second though, we might realize we have everything we need to overcome whatever’s in our way. It’s called leverage. So yes, you can flip that car if it’s going to solve a problem for you. Just use a sturdy stick and a rock and go ahead, tumble that car.

More often though, we realize the car is right where it should be. You have nothing against this car. You’re just angry and have to do something. Then you’ll feel better. And you’re absolutely right! You have to do something, but first, take a step back and figure out what it is you can actually do.

Usually, it’s not as drastic. It’s the little things. You can do something about it, you just have to figure out what. You have skills, friends, look around, you can use any of that with just a little intelligence. Forget brute force, it rarely ever works. So take a deep breath, step back, and think.

What can you actually do that will have an actual impact on your situation? It might not work on the first try, it will definately be hard, but I’m betting it will be worth it. And next time, even more, since you’ll have your previous experience to guide you.

So learn to trust yourself a little more and things will go more smoothly.

Well, that’s what I’m starting to tell myself. I’ll let you know how that turns out.
