As a developer, I’ve always been a little shy of depending on 3rd party services other then for a few experiments but on the other hand, I truly believe (or at the very least, I really want to believe) in the small bits loosely joined, semantic web, microformats and all that jazz. For me, they’re a natural expansion of the free software I’ve been working with and developping for the last 15 year or so. Yet running software you don’t control, well… that’s a departure from free software but it obviously has its merits.
So the paradox, or dilemna, if you prefer, is should I find a service that does what I want or should I code it myself, releasing it as free software for others to deploy as well? And what of the data? There’s this little thing called traceability which is an important factor in trust…

The OpenMoko developer preview is now shipping. Is anyone in Montreal or around getting one?
Forget the iPhone, it’s not going to work in Canada for another year, at least legally.
The OpenMoko has everything to do with freedom. Choose your service, the color, the software, etc. It’s a nice GNU/Linux platform which is promised to a great future.
Fabian mentionned the OpenMoko a few times, I bet he’ll be one of the first to hold one.
Sylvain Carle donnait une présentation sur les microformats vendredi dernier à la conférence PHP. J’en ai profité pour rapiècer des bouts de code. Je dis rapiècer, mais en fait il a fallu écrire le convertisseur vCard -> hCard. Tout ça se trouve dans pimpf mais le plus beau, ce sont les fameuses slides de Sylvain (PDF) ;)
Je vais m’informer s’il y a eu un enregistrement vidéo.
La version 5 de Drupal vient de sortir en ce sixième anniversaire du célèbre système de gestion de contenu. C’est Koumbit qui va être content de faire tous ces upgrades :P
On compte déjà 212 modules et 14 thèmes disponibles pour la nouvelle version.
Qu’est-ce que j’ai bien pu manger le mois dernier ? Tout ce que je sais, c’est qu’au lieu de me reposer en campagne (faut avouer que j’ai quand même lever le pied quand à mes implications usuelles), j’ai plutôt commencé une bonne douzaine de projets.

I failed to mention my latest release, a few weeks old in fact. Comes with documentation for all you PHP fans out there :) The front page is a little raw, Lorem Ipsum, PHP API implementation of the lipsum.com web service, but there are nice docs at least.
See an example of the lipsum php api usage and source code.
It can return html, json and xml, as you wish. Depends on php4, no php5 funkiness.
Web 2.0 is still the rave, nobody can shut up about it. I’m sure it reared its flashy head at hotdog eating contests simply because it’s so trendy. Anyhow, some of the topics it touches are very meaningful and we should take the time to pay them the attention they deserve.

Le Ottawa Linux Symposium a encore une fois attiré les foules, mais si vous êtes comme moi (et pas comme Hubert et Yannick B.), vous trouveriez ça rébarbatif d’entendre parler que du noyau pendant des jours. Parce qu’ici, Linux veut bien dire kernel, et non l’ensemble des logiciels et systèmes qui constituent GNU/Linux.

Mon corps m’interdit de sortir ce soir, une partie de mon estomac est en train de se faire bouffer par l’autre ou je sais pas quoi, mais ça travaille là-dedans. VHS is a command line program to create sub-titles for videos in the SRT format. It uses the Videolan (VLC) through its telnet-rc interface to provide a clean and simple interface to add subtitles and timing information to any video file supported by VLC, picking from where you left off last time.
