I immediately thought of this short story Richard Stallman wrote in 1997:
The Right to Read

Here’s how it starts:

“For Dan Halbert, the road to Tycho began in college—when Lissa Lenz asked to borrow his computer. Hers had broken down, and unless she could borrow another, she would fail her midterm project. There was no one she dared ask, except Dan.

This put Dan in a dilemma. He had to help her—but if he lent her his computer, she might read his books. Aside from the fact that you could go to prison for many years for letting someone else read your books, the very idea shocked him at first. Like everyone, he had been taught since elementary school that sharing books was nasty and wrong—something that only pirates would do.”

Après plusieurs mois de discussions depuis l’annonce initiale le 16 janvier 2006 et quatre brouillons, voici enfin la tant attendue GPL version 3 ! Quoi, vous pensiez vraiment que j’allais parler de l’iPhone ? Mwahaha ! Le dernier brouillon de la GPL est toujours disponible et date de la fin mai. C’est à midi aujourd’hui, 29 juin 2007, qu’on pourra lire la version officielle et suivre l’annonce en direct sur le site de la Free Software Foundation.

I started writing A sense of singularity the moment I got back from meeting Hugh (asking What is the open movement?), Mike (aptly calling it a discussion group), Steve, Julien, Brett (with a video on open movement (with a smaller (1.4 MiB audio speex version)) and a few appearances by Ella.

Like Hugh, I won’t try to summarize our discussion, but will focus more succinctly on my hopes and how I generally unmanage my environment. First I’d like to mention a few facts that caught my attention about the group that met at Laika. I only go there exceptionnally, so you won’t hear me call it my office, whereas the rest of the group seem to hang there much more frequently. The other thing is podcasting and vlogging. Again, I’m probably the only one from the group not taking part in those activities. It’s true that Devlin was supposed to be there but had to cancel at the last moment. Would have balanced things out a bit more I guess.

Jeudi soir prochain, je vais donner une présentation sur un sujet qui me tient à coeur depuis 1997 ou 1998, soit les wikis et le web social. C’est l’année de Web 2.0, mais le web a toujours été social. Avant, internet était social. À coup de buzzwords, on oublie facilement que les nodes du réseau, ce ne sont pas des machines, mais des individus.

Cette présentation s’adresse à un large public, du débutant à l’expert. Je vous promets quelques découvertes inédites, mais surtout je compte sur la participation du public pour améliorer en temps réel la présentation. Nul besoin d’être informaticien pour comprendre. Un désir de mieux communiquer est cependant prérequis :)

J’y retracerai très rapidement l’histoire d’internet, du web et des wikis. On fera la distinction entre l’outil, c’est à dire l’engin wiki, et son utilisation, son contenu, ses utilisateurs. On verra les utilisations les plus populaires et quelques utilisations surprenantes ainsi que ce qui distingue les différents engins. On découvrira les dérivés des wikis et la similarité avec IRC. Finalement, comment est-ce que les wikis s’inscrivent dans l’écosystème du web social, via ses communautés, les services web, le XML, le RSS/Atom/RDF, etc.

Comme toutes les présentations mensuelles de FACIL, c’est le troisième jeudi du mois à 18h au CRIM.

Vous avez peut-être déjà entendu parler du nouveau projet de la Free Software Foundation. Le document que je traduis ci-dessous a été modifié la dernière fois le 2005-02-12 03:37 PM.

« Le projet Assemblée, une nouvelle initiative de la FSF a débuté depuis plus d’un mois. Ce projet est la culmination de plusieurs années d’expérience à manipuler des droits d’auteurs. Avec l’expansion du nombre de projet de logiciels libre, la communauté du logiciel libre a besoin d’un moyen efficace pour garder l’inventaire de ses documents légaux.

L’Opération assemblée va créer un processus automatique et tranparent qui permettra aux contributeurs individuels d’être associés à leurs contributions et les documents légaux qui s’y rattachent. Une fois sur pied, ce projet permettra d’obtenir des informations fiables en regard aux détenteurs des droits. You may have already heard about this new Free Software Foundation project. The document I’m citing was last modified 2005-02-12 03:37 PM.

“A new initiative the FSF has undertaken is called the Assembly Project. This Project is the culmination of our many years of experience in handling copyrights. With the expansion in the number of Free Software Projects, the Free Software community needs an effective inventory control system for its legal papers.

The Assembly Operation will create an automatic, and transparent process by which the individual contributor will be matched up with their contribution and the related legal documents. Once established this will provide reliable and valuable information in regards to ownership. The Assembly Project will further develop FSF’s established procedures, creating a process that will be easily portable to other Free Software projects.” — source: the Assembly Project @ FSF

« Dans sa vision d?une loi du droit d?auteur plus équitable, Stallman explique que les oeuvres ne doivent pas être catégorisés selon le médium par lequel on les échangent, mais bien selon le but recherché. À l?heure actuel, tout passe sous la même loi, écrit, film, recette, idée? (1) Les oeuvres pratiques : Il a donné comme exemple une recette de cuisine ou un programme informatique. Ces créations devraient être protégés pour un maximum de 3 ans et ce à compter de la date de publication (ce qui permet à l?auteur de prendre tout son temps pour arriver à une oeuvre dont il est satisfait). Il a toutefois insisté sur le fait que l?on parle de version du logiciel. »

It?s too bad the debate was so acrimonious, with, I think it?s fair to say, Bornfreund crossing the line from reasoned argument to show-boaty attack, and not coming off too well in the process. His fascist comments were over the top, and his views of freedom rather childish (if you think freedom is so great, then I am free to punch you in the nose and there?s nothing you can do about it), still if you don?t have time to think about it they sell well, especially since you hear this kind of view of freedom so often (eg free markets = democracy etc). »
